Who Was Eric Bloodaxe?

Eric Bloodaxe (c. 885–954 AD), aka Eric Haraldsson, was a Viking warrior king known for his brutal reign and fierce ambition. A son of Harald Fairhair, the first king to unify Norway, Eric ruled briefly over Norway and later governed Northumbria in northern England. His moniker, "Bloodaxe," stems from both his prowess in battle and his ruthless rise to power—eliminating rivals, including his own brothers, giving him the name "Brother-Slayer," or "Bloodaxe."

Though some aspects of his story are legendary, Eric remains a towering figure in Viking lore—representing a bridge between Norse paganism and the encroaching Christian world.

Historical Note: While the round shows Eric Bloodaxe in a horned helmet, Vikings did not actually wear horned helmets. This popular image is a 19th-century invention, not based on archaeological evidence.
